Two Toddlers Who "Need" TV?

Question

I have a friend who has a 2 year old and a 3 year old. She posted on a local Facebook classifieds page stating that she's looking to buy a new DVD player because her children need the stimulation and only want to watch movies all day. Instead of getting answers or suggestions, she's getting a lot of hate from people saying that she's just lazy and that toddlers don't need that stimulation. I have to agree with the fact that toddlers don't need to constantly be in front of a TV, but I think it's wrong for people to judge her and call her lazy. Is it considered lazy for her to allow them to watch movies all day?

The doctor told a family whom I nanny for to limit screens for children under 5 to 30 mins a day max. He said that several studies are showing slower brain development. Not shocking at all.

Make good healthy choices for your children to have the best chances at succeeding.

As some who has a degree in child development and 10 plus years experience, children need stimulation but  with open ended objects that allow them to explore concepts, ideas and feelings. Like blocks or puppets or crayons & blank paper. Kids are amazing they love to learn how to do almost everything.  They also need to go outside everyday twice a day if possible.

Uhh, maybe you should teach them to clean up after themselves or to help you clean. Not trying to be rude, but for real. Make a game out of it so they know it's a good thing and that it's important. My 18 month old can clean up his toys and help me clean so I'm pretty sure a 5 year old can do the same...

Toddlers and kids in general are already overly exposed to TV and media. It's messed up and I think it is lazy to just turn on movies and let them be, but it's not my kid so who am I to say? If it were me, I'd be asking for toys and stuff instead of a DVD player. I highly disagree that toddlers "need" the stimulation.

Yes. But with children that age it is difficult. That said, if you're not prepared to kill yourself looking after them then don't have them.

Children two or younger don't need any screen time. Children need limited screen time-that includes ipads, video games and phones. I understand occasionally plopping them in front of the tv if they're aick, or to get something done but the fact that she said they won't do anything else is a little worrisome. They should be playing! Not addicted to tv.

That seems like an excessive amount of "screen time".

I'm not at all the "granola mom" type, but all day is a lot. Of course, It's probably learned behavior for doing it their whole life not necessarily because that's all they want to do. But if mom puts on movies all day everyday eventually that's all they will know and want to do. It does seem like lazy parenting though.

It's gonna suck for those kids when they have to go to school.
