I was starting to run out of space in the freezer so we bought a deep freezer. I want to donate my extra milk but I'm also paranoid that I will run out of milk as soon as I do. Has anyone donated and how did they know or at what point did they feel they had to donate their extra milk?

It depends on your situation, are you going back to work? If so, have you already? I wouldn't donate until you go back & established a pumping situation. You might find you need to if baby is bottle eating more than you can pump. Some people don't respond well to pumps. If you are already back, and have a "surplus" each week, donate. If you don't plan to work, pick a comfortable freezer number, then donate once you double that. So let's say you always want 50 ounces in your freezer for date nights, emergency etc. donate 50 once you get to 100. So you still have your 50.

They had a milk donor program at the hospital when my daughter was born early. I was told most moms that have an abundance of milk or moms that lose their babies donate. Breast milk stays fresh for up to a year if it's frozen I believe. I would donate just a couple small bags at a time if you have that much.
