Midwife or unmedicated birth experiences?

Question

I'm interested in learning about unmedicated births,  delivery with midwifes, home births, doulas, etc.  (I don't mean to assume they always go together, I just happen to be interested in hearing about all of the above).  Does anyone have experiences they would like to share on either topic?

In the UK nearly all births are midwife led unless you are considered high risk, it's completely the norm here. A lot are done at birthing centres too where only certain medications are available so no epidurals

I'll tell you my birth story. I intentionally chose the hospital for being the most known for having the least interventions. Then I chose the midwives who deliver there. I was expecting to be two weeks late and be in labor for three days. I went into labor on the day after my due date at 4 am. I knew it would be awhile so I just went out for breakfast and then hung out. At 4 pm my contractions were four minutes apart so I called the midwife (who didn't think I was in labor but said I could come get checked). I checked in at five and I was at 8cm :) I walked around the room for two hours and then lay on the floor for the last hour. My water didn't break until 7:45 though I started pushing at 7. Kind of. Just around then I asked if I had less than three hours left :). They could see the head. So they laughed. I yelled a little for the last four sets of contractions but it was no big deal. Mostly I yelled "wait!" Because I wanted her to come out slowly.

I recommend reading Ina May's Guide to Childbirth and Breastfeeding. I gave birth to my daughter all natural with a midwife. It was an amazing experience.

Watch The Business of Being Born if you have Netflix! It is so informative and so good! Unfortunately I didn't watch it until AFTER I had given birth that had a bunch of medical interventions (pitocin induction, epidural, breaking my water, episiotomy, the whole 9 yards), but it changed my perspective on birth and is very encouraging if natural birth is something you are considering!

I had two unmedicated births. Definitely an amazing experience and I used an OB as I didn't know the difference between and didn't look up! But I loved mine!
