Question

I'm curious how doctors can tell if the baby has a birth defect, downs, or any sort of thing like that if they don't do ultrasounds after the anatomy scan. They only do Doppler to listen to the heart beat. Can't bad things just pop up even if your anatomy scan went great ?

Between 11 & 13 weeks you have to choose whether or not to go for prenatal screening. They can tell by measuring the sack between the baby's neck. At about 17 weeks that sac disappears and is no longer viable to tell. They also check through bloodwork and through the anatomy scan by measurements of the baby.

I think that by the time they do the anomaly scan the 20 weeks ultrasound if thats what you're talking about all the major things have formed and if something was wrong they would see it then, after that everything just grows. I mean I think that's how it all works:)

There are a few ways to measure for DS on ultrasound. One way is the nuchal fold behind the neck, the other is checking whether the nasal bone is present.
