missed period

Hey everyone, this is my first time posting but need some help, I have cysts on my ovaries but Drs have said not enough to be pcos, anyway I used to have really irregular periods like once every 3/4 months, so like only 3/4 periods a year, so about 7 months ago I went on the pill for a month but it was making me really emotional and depressed  so I stopped taking it, but my periods have been regular ever since, me and my boyfriend are currently trying for a baby and I'm now about 6 days late for my period, I don't wanna get my hopes up, but not sure when to take a test, or if I even want to just in case it's negative, help!! :)
