Do debt collectors ring off of a mobile phone number?

Question

I live in the UK. 
My SO has a fine he hasn't paid off and was contacted by a debt collector. They had told him they sent a letter to his address (his old address) and what the fine was for how much he had to pay ect..
The only dogey thing as that they rang of a moblie number asking for payment over the phone. 
No payment plan was offered, They rang his moblie which I know if normal thanks. :-)
Has anyone else been contracted by a debt collector was it from a mobile number?
I know its not pregnacy related sorry

Im from the UK and be careful there is a scam going around where they use this to get your bank details and clone your card. It happend to someone i know and they had hell getting money back with bank and police said its extremely common now. If you owe debt they will send a person to your doorstep like bailiff.  Contact the company to which you owe and directly sort it out with them rather then them contact you.

If any call ever comes in for anything, especially if they are asking for money, DONT GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION!!!

You should get the company info and look up the company directly, check for scam reports, and if everything checks out: you call them... and if local, go see them in person. Don't call the number they called you from or they give you.

In fact, ask if there is a place you can locally to make payment... basically avoid making any payments over the phone if at all possible.

If it is a government agency or a true collector, they will have no issue with this and even support you in doing so.

Such scams happen all the time, some claiming to be government agencies even.

I've read that there is a scam going around right now in the U.K., so have your boyfriend contact them himself (I'm sure he remembers where he has this unpaid bill) and take care of it that way just to be safe.

Companies use all kinds of numbers now. If he calls up the company he originally owes the money to he can usually sort it out with them

I'm in the US. I use to collect on student debt. We did call cell phones. But first we had to send out a letter give time and then contact consumer. Usually when someone is collecting debt you can work out a payment plan.
