How did you know you were in labour?

Question

Hi all, I have been given some homework from my antenatal class and need to ask people about their labour experiences.

So to all you non-FTMs out there:
1. How did you know you were in labour? 
2. How did you know it was time to go to the hospital?

I would agree with that. That's usually when I get Braxton hicks. The real ones get very intense to where you can do nothing but try to breathe  through it.

I started having menstrual cramps that increasing worse and were able to be timed.  Started timing around 7 minutes apart and went to hospital when they got around 3 minutes apart.

Bad back pain and cramps that slowly turned into contractions. It got so painful I couldn't wall anymore. They started at night,but at first were not as bad so i was able to sleep for the most part. By morning it got bad i used a heating pad on my lower back.

I had contractions that became super painful and a couple minutes apart. I labored at home for about 12 hours the my water finally partially broke so I had to go to the hospital. I was 7cm when I got there!

I had period like cramps all day then around 8pm they started to get a little painful so I timed them. Within 2 hours they'd gone from 10 minutes apart to 5, were regular, and more painful. Next hour I had to bend over and breathe deeply through them, couldn't sit or lie down or talk during them and they were a minute apart so called my dr and she said come to the hospital ASAP. Baby was born 4 hours later.

My first two kids, my water broke at home. I knew it was my water cause it was clear and kept leaking out. My third child, I had sharp lower back pain that progressively got worse throughout the day. 
After my water broke the first two times, I took a shower, got my things together and went to the hospital. My third one, after the pain got to be unbearable I went to the hospital

How did you know you were in labour?
