Nurses assist by giving a uterine massage to encourage the uterus to retract and to prevent hemorraging.

It's not a massage, unless you are bleeding heavily. It's a fundal check. We check for the tone of your uterus, a soft and bogging fundus is bad and is often an early sign of hemmorhaging. The fundus (uterus) should be firm which indicates it is contracting back to its original size. Fundal checks will be done a couple times following any birth and you will be "massaged" if it's not contracting properly or is too soft. Massaging encourages it to contract and continue to shrink.

For me they just pushed down really hard repeatedly. I had the epidural so honestly I didn't feel anything but pressure.

I'll tell you what. That wasn't no damn massage. That nurse was trying to get my spine out of my belly button. I had to push her off of me and refused the next one. They hurrrrrrrt me. Bad. I was in more pain after that than when I pushed a baby out of my twat.

I had a csection. I remember that they did it but I don't even remember any details. I wouldn't worry about it

I'm not sure if they do it after vaginal births but they do after c-sections to help the uterus contract back to its smaller size. It's not terrible but it's not great.
