any other music majors here?

Question

Currently a senior Cello Performance Major and just freaking out about getting a job after college. Everyone else has had all these opportunities in college and like on campus jobs and stuff and I'm just sitting here broke with nothing.

My husband has a tuba performance degree... and is going back to school for pharmacy.

It CAN be done, but expect to have multiple jobs (be in a number of orchestras, private teaching, one time only gigs...).  There can also be a lot of travel involved for jobs- that's the main reason he decided to change directions, he wanted to be more if a family man and stay close to home.

I do have a cousin who is a horn professor, but it took 10+ years, a masters degree, and living in almost nothing. He also is only now starting a family in his 30s.  I'm not saying is a bad thing to wait like that, but you have to evaluate what's right for YOU and what you want out of life.

I went to college and minored in music, which is how I meet my husband. I considered going to school for music (oboe performance), but I recognized that I didn't have the drive or desire to REALLY make it.

Even if you don't make it a career, many areas have community orchestras, and I've been in some small ensembles that play for fun with the occasional gig at a coffee shop for Christmas. I also have played with churches, and in the pit at my community theater.
