Question for moms who breastfed and pumped

So I plan on breast feeding and don't really want to pump a whole lot, but I do want to have some backup and pump to increase my milk supply (at least I think that's how that works). When did you first pump? I heard you can't pump for a few weeks so when is the soonest you can? Thanks.
