Do you find it weird/ rude

Do you find it weird/rude to ask people to bring a plate of food to an event that you said you'd host?

My partner and I are hosting Christmas and my partner said that we should ask people to bring a dish.. I just feel that weird.

He made the point of: "we still have to buy all their gifts, and christmas decorations for the house... shopping for the meals will cost $400 alone.."

And I see where he is coming from, but it just feels uncomfortable as we are hosting.. how are we hosting if we ask people to bring a plate of food?

I know a lot of people do ask guests to bring a plate of food its just something I don't usually consider asking of people.

Whats your opinion?
