Trisomy 21 Prenatal Screening?! PLEASE HELP?

Can someone please explain the pros and cons of getting these tests done? I'm so confused. What are the risks? What do they do? Is miscarriage a risk? Have anyone of you had it done? I'm keeping my baby, Down syndrome or not but my doctor seemed to be pushing me more towards doing it, and saying that at one point they do an ultrasound which can also show if there's anything abnormal with the bladder and stuff like that too? I'm really lost but I don't want to have any of these exams done if there's a chance it'll hurt my baby.

The first test is a blood test, ultrasound 11-14 weeks pregnant and then they work out your chances using your age and some other factors. If you have a low chance of having a baby with Down syndrome or anything else then that will be all that is done but if you have a higher chance then you will be offered an amniocentesis but you don't have to accept it. Maybe call your health care provider and ask these questions to them as that is what they are there for. They will advise you of what is right for you and give you some clarity on everything.

I had the screening tests done and it came back as 1in 5 chance of downs syndrome. I then opted to have a amniocentesis coz we felt we needed to know. This has a 1% to 2% chance of miscarriage. They place a needle in ur belly and take a sample of amniotic fluid and this contains chromosomes from the baby. They send this sample to a lab to check for downs and other chromosome disorders. Mine came back all clear and the procedure itself wasn't as bad or as painful as I anticipated. I am now 35 weeks and looking forward to my little girls arrival :-) xxxx

The test given before the age of 25 does not have a 100% accuracy rate. I don't know the exact number, but believe it's somewhere in the 60% range. Consequently, you could incur a false positive, or as stated above, a false negative. Just for your information, as you get ready to make a decision. Best wishes! 💙

My sister had all the tests and every single one came back with an extremely low chance of having a baby with Ds. She was 29 at the time. Guess what.. That ridiculously adorable and amazing baby surprised us by having Down syndrome. We found out 20 minutes after she was born. That little girl is the best part of my life.

I had it and it was an US to measure the fluid in the back of baby's neck and blood test. Nothing risky in my opinion but may be costly if your insurance doesn't cover so check with them or have the provider preauth it. I still don't know what the cost is bc I haven't got the bill but my husband really wanted it so I guess it didn't matter to us.

My screenings were all done through a blood test so no danger to baby. They just drew my blood and I got all my results back in 2 weeks.

We chose to have the screenings done so we could prepare if needed. I am 35 so at a slight increased risk. We were keeping the baby regardless but wanted to make sure we had all the support in place.

The NT Scan is just an ultrasound and they take measurements of the fluid behind the baby snack. There is a blood draw and that's it. The risks are extremely low. Other screening such as being able to make sure that the baby is forming all of its organs properly, that is typically done around 18 to 20 weeks at the anatomy scan. That too is a ultrasound and they are likely to take blood
