Question about DNA testing

Jade
I know how it sounds, but there was no cheating involved in our relationship. Not going to get into heavy details, but I was wondering if hospitals offer DNA testing for paternity before you sign the birth certificate? Looking to avoid complicated situations. Any mommies out there who know?

Usually, they only asks if the father is going to sign the birth certificate or not- agreeing that he IS the father. I know my hospital doesn't offer such thing. Those usually u need to go at a separate place and have it done. . Ur obgyn offeres such services.. hospitals not so much.

I'm not 100% positive but I don't believe it's required that the birth certificate be completed prior to leaving the hospital e.g. you can wait and decide on the name etc later. the hospital typically takes care of it but I don't believe it's required to do it right then. call the labor and delivery department of the hospital, it's possible they will do it but they likely don't verbally offer it because most couples might be offended if they flat out ask if you want it done.

if he doesn't sign it right away, and we have the test done, can we have him sign it later? would it still be valid?

Most hospitals won't. They will just recommend leaving the father place blank and having it amended once you can have the DNA test done elsewhere... I wish they tested but they don't....

Paternity testing isn't an automatic offer. You'll need to talk to your doctor & request it.

no. a nurse/ official, comes in while ur still recovering in bed at the hospital and asks all the questions with u AND the father. and they are REALLY taking their job seriously. when we had it done, the lady asked my fiance 3 times if he's ACCEPTING and AGREE ING to sign the certificate, as if my fiance was about to run away or something. .

You can always leave it blank & change it later. I've never had a father listed on mine.

That will depend on the hospital, if their lab does or onsite or if it gets sent out. Your doctor should be able to tell you. If they need to send the test out it may take awhile to get the results (days to weeks).
