what happens if you're on bc and pregnant?

I know I am not pregnant, but I was just curious. My pills say not to take them if I become pregnant, but why? Will it harm the baby? I mean I get there is no point in taking them if you're already pregnant. I was just curious.

Someone I know found out she was pregnant after taking depression/aniexty pills and birth control for a decent amount of time. The baby had things like it's lungs etc growing outside of its body. The doctor said it wouldn't make the 9 months so she got an abortion. There's no medical research saying that bc does any major damage in the being/early stages of a pregnancy.
