What do you think? Thanksgiving Compromise.

Question

So today is Thanksgiving and both of our families are starting at 3. I tried to compromise with my SO And ask if we could go to my moms house this morning, help her cook and eat there first since my dad isn't here this year (he is in rehab for alcoholism) because at the moment it's just her and my sister and I wanted to be there to help.... I told him after we eat there we can go to your Aunts to eat (40 min drive) so you can watch the Cowboys game with your family and we can wait on his daughter to get there. 
He threw a huge fit and told me I always try and make him feel bad and that I didn't have to say they were there alone. Like, wtf?! They are and that's the reason behind why I want to go there first!!!

We have been going to therapy and learning how to communicate better. I thought about how I was going to ask him before I did and I knew in the back of my mind that he wasn't going to want to make any compromises. I realized why our communication was fucked up to begin with... I can't ever say anything without him being offended or upset. I decided I'm just going to my moms and chillin with my family today.

P.S. - his family can't cook anyway 😆🙄

I don't want to sound selfish but I (personally) would go to my moms. Sounds like your family is going through a lot. It's not like you told him you were spending it with them, You were compromising and for him to still not be okay with that is beyond me. You shouldn't feel bad about anything because you did the fair thing! Good luck

That's a perfectly reasonable compromise. In fact, I think you're making more of a sacrifice, your family is going through a lot and they shouldn't have to spend today alone. It's not as though you were trying to manipulate the situation, your family will be alone, and that IS sad. He sounds insensitive and selfish.

Compromise is what a relationship has to be about. My mother in law is my neighbor & my dad is 30 minutes away. Our dinners are at the same time. We see his mom & stepdad all the time so we are going to my dads first then to his moms when we get back home & she understands that. If you guys can't compromise now you have many years ahead that it's going to be a problem.
