My now ex has a cellphone it's under my name and I pay for it can I take the phone and hide it until the contract is over? I can't afford to cancel it right now but yea can I take the phone?

You can suspend service for free until the contract is up, you still pay for the service but the phone itself doesn't work.

Who does the phone actually belong to; you or him?  Just because the contract is in your name doesn't necessarily mean you own the phone. Did you buy him that phone or did he?  You can always suspend the service if you just don't want him using the phone.

If he paid for the actual phone... No you can't  take it, but since usually (in contract) to cancel its a big lump sum.... not worth it... the difference  for having on your  plan os probably about 20$  .... so I'd  either have him pay u monthly  for his amount, or just cancel it and swallow  the money. Depends on how u wanna act.

Just surrender the number. Say you can't afford it anymore, and you two aren't together. If he still wants to keep it, he would have to call the company right after you surrender it and say he wants to take responsibility for it. If not, he loses it

Report the phone as stolen. If you need someone else on the plan because of the contract, then have a friend or family member use the other line and pay their portion. Problem solved. Now your ex will have a stolen phone and when he tries to use it anywhere, the serial number of the phone will come up as stolen and no one will allow him to activate that phone.
