What's the difference between a birthing center and a labor and delivery unit???

Insurance covers L&D, birthing centers are usually not covered (call your insurance to confirm)
Birthing centers are all natural, no interventions if not necessary. They require you to be low risk, because of this. They're more relaxed and home like. 
L&D is a hospital, first and foremost. It's recommended for those that are high risk and/or those who know they will want some sort of intervention. You CAN absolutely have an all natural birth here, with the right team and preparation beforehand. It just may be harder, knowing that you can just ask and get medication, so your willpower has to be strong. Your birthing team is key here.
