When is appropriate to stop pacifier use?

As I've grown into motherhood I've noticed older as in two plus older babies with pacifiers. When is it ok to stop using the pacifier and have you seen older babies with them.

We're going to try and break the habit before our son turns 1 or right after. I feel like going into 2 and 3 years old it starts getting tricky because they really know what it is and depend on it. We've already started limiting the use of it when my 7 month old is awake and usually only give him one at nap time.

They say to break the habit at 3. My daughter is 2 and we're working on taking it away but with all everything else going on my ped said to choose my battles wisely for now. Lol

Personally I think it's weird to see a 1 year old with a pacifier.. but both my kids took themselves off it. My daughter at 6 months and my son recently stopped taking it at 4 months
