Who's to blame? Gas Station Robbery

Question

Three teens (15-17) decide to rob a gas station as a prank.

One will hold a gun (a candy bar poking through a hoodie pocket to simulate a gun barrel) and hold another teen "hostage" by pointing the "gun barrel" into the hostages side. The third teen will stand unseen somewhere and film it, assumedly for YouTube. All teens are disguised in thick clothes/sun glasses/etc.

They go to a gas station on the edge of their town at night and wait until no customers are in the store. They act out their plan and the lone employee, terrified, ducts down and grabs a [legally owned] gun that's hidden behind stuff under the counter for such an occasion. Robber teen screams for the clerk to stand back up, but the clerk has crawled to the other end of the counter, crawls around the counters entry point, and fatally shoots robber teen and causes minor injuries to the hostage. The hostage is now screaming, third teen runs over screaming and the clerk is calling 911 thinking the hostage has been saved.

Their cases are pending in court, what do you think should happen?

The employee is acting in self defence since he truly believe that he and the "hostage" are in danger. He isn't liable.

I mean, I'd at least say that the surviving pranksters may get an "assault" charge for acting in a reckless way that made the employee fear immediate harm.

Anyone who said all three should be charged?! Um, have you ever taken a law class in high school in your life or simply watched the news? 
Think if you were in his situation, if you had a gun handy, you would have done the same thing. It's self defense. He would have had no clue if the "gun" was real or not. In that situation, it's your life over a strangers. 
I feel bad that these kids got hurt and one unfortunately died but they should have been using their brains. Pranks like this don't go well and this is a very good example of that. I hope this teaches kids their age not to do dumb shit like this.

The clerk did nothing wrong. All he did was defend himself, his store and the hostage. Whether he saw the gun or not he had good reason to believe there was a gun so be shot the robber. It's sad that anyone had to die but it goes to show how stupid people can be. These kids were idiots for thinking that it would've been funny and that they could've gotten away with it. Plenty of convenience stores keep guns under the counter, I don't know why people can't get that through their thick heads.
