Showers in your area

How are baby showers in your area thrown ? In my area, they tend to be big affairs with friends and family. Lots of them. Nice big cakes, lots of decorations, music and food. On other series sites, I've seen people frown upon this, call it tacky and dictate how other people should be throwing their events. Apparently mothers and grandparents shouldn't be throwing their own showers, as that is "tacky". They shouldn't be more than 20 ppl and they should be in someone's home. How are things where you're from?
