who should be in the delivery room???

I am pregnant with baby boy #2 and I really want my 4 year old son to be in the delivery room with me. Everyone I tell this too thinks I'm crazy and says no he should come in right after the baby is born. What do you ladies think?

Personally I don't think he should be there. I honestly think it could be scary for him to see you in that much pain

Kids are capable of understanding so much more than we give them credit for. I say go for it, he will tell you if he doesn't want to be apart of it anymore.

I want my 8 year old sister in the room but my mom said no. I don't think it should be seen as a scary thing. You're bringing a beautiful life into the world!

My hospital says everyone must be over 18 years of age unless the father is underage then he is permitted in. So if the father  is only 16 he can still be there but that's the only exception they told me they will make. As long as your son is comfortable while in the room and is allowed to leave if he wants I don't see why he shouldn't be in there.

This is my first, but if I have another I like to think I would want my son there. Childbirth is a natural thing. Nothing to be scared or grossed out about. I plan on teaching my son to not be ashamed of his body or natural things and part of that is leading by example.

I just was thinking that if he's in there he won't feel left out. I want him to understand what's going on. So when he ask how the baby is coming out I tell him the truth so that he understands.

I don't think there is any "should" and "shouldn't" as long as you're prepared and your hospital approves. My hospital allows one support person and they must be over 18 years old (I'm sure they make exceptions if necessary). I would have someone on hand to take your child away if they aren't coping or keep them busy if they start to get bored/antsy. But you know your child best, of course!

When I had my second I wanted my 4 year old son to be the first one to meet his little brother. Maybe you could have family/friend st the hospital with your older one and wait until everything is cleaned up and in the clear.

I would be thinking of the unknowns. Of course we want everything to go as planned, but what happens if there is a situation and the baby is having problems or you are having problems. This is a stressful time and I wouldn't want to worry about my older son while something is happening with the baby. Just my opinion.
