When should you go to an OB/GYN?

We just found out we are pregnant a couple of days ago. My sister who is in another country told me that I should go to an OB/GYN already so the doc can give me vitamins and whatever I need for the pregnancy.

I just called one clinic and the secretary said that that particular doctor doesn't see patients until they are 8 weeks pregnant. Which is more than halfway through the first trimester already. I thought the first trimester was the time with the most risk therefore the very time needed for an assistance of a doctor.

When did you go to the doctor after a positive pregnancy test and if anyone can recommend a good OB/GYN. Thanks!

8 weeks is normal so you can hear a heartbeat. Any earlier and you might not hear anything and it causes a lot of stress. Yes you are at risk in the first 12 weeks but there isn't anything a Dr can really do for you if you miscarry. Take prenatals now then make an appt to get in asap. Good luck and congrats!

I started taking over the counter prenatals... the gummies. Went to see my OB for the first time at 9 weeks... He wrote me a prescription for prenatals but said to finish what I'm on right now especially if they weren't making me feel sick. His biggest concern was to make sure it had folic acid and iron. My current vitamin doesn't have iron, but he said in the first trimester the baby isn't pulling too much away so I should be okay to finish my last 10 and then switch to my prescription ones. They won't usually see you earlier unless you're high risk. I can tell you what he told me: no lunch meat unless I heat it up, stay away from fish with high levels of mercury, take prenatals, don't eat cheese that's not pasteurized, he gave me a flu shot since I hadnt already had it and he gave me a list of medications I can take (I can always post the picture if you would like- Tylenol, Benadryl, 1/2 a unisom tablet, b6 pills have been common for me.)

You can go the Target, GNC, WalMart and buy over the counter Prenatal Vitamins (I take GNC with the extra DHA) Take care of yourself until you can see the dr. Don't smoke, drink, etc and try to drink lots of water to stay hydrated. I was lucky that my dr started monitoring me when I was only 5 weeks since I had a 13 yr history of TTC. I think every place is different.  Im from the uk and found out i was pregnant and called my doctor who said we do not do a blood test because your test was positive. So i called the midwife who then gave me an appointment, ill be nine weeks when i go and a few days kater she sent me a letter telling me to get my flu jag, and to take prenatal ps which was just vitamin d and folic acid

But you can still call and schedule your appt if your ob is like mine it will take a few weeks to be seen

I wasn't seen until 11 weeks... there really isn't a whole lot of prenatal care that can be done. They told me they don't see women until 10 weeks, to see if the baby is still viable. Just get a prenatal at the store. That's about all there is to do at this point

I didn't have my first appointment til I was almost 11 weeks, in the meantime my OB told me to get an OTC prenatal or she could call something in for me. I found out with this pregnancy that doctors pretty much do nothing for a baby until 20 weeks unfortunately so even if something did happen they let nature take it's course
