Can epidurals harm the baby/can they have side effects that affect baby?

I want to go natural but I also want to be prepared for the fact that I might need it but I won't if it could harm my child.

I asked my doctor this once and he said that anything and everything CAN have an affect on the baby but that doesn't mean it always will.. the most common issue he had come across was a decrease in the fetal heart rate but it was rarely ever  anything to worry about. He also told me that epidurals tend to slow down labor and this can at times cause stress to the baby. But these aren't for every case.. I had epidurals with two my children and they were perfectly fine. Talk to your doctor about it :)

Yes. You can be paralyzed or have chronic back pains if they do it wrong. Something bad could happen to you/baby but doesn't mean it will. You should do your own research and make that decision on your own. I had all natural birth and it was bad but I made it. You can do anything you put your mind to.

Epidurals can hurt you too! The nurse who did my mom's fucked up and my mom lost feeling in her ass for over 15 years.

Apparently they can cause respiratory depression and decreased heart rate in newborns, but it's subtle effects on the baby. I haven't heard of epidurals doing serious harm to a child

It can mess up your back if the anesthesiologist didn't do it correctly also it can slow labor down. Baby could also be a little groggy from it but not too much

I have a very high pain tolerance and my epidural didn't work. I don't ever want to be pregnant again just because of the pain of contractions. After 18 hours I begged for a c section because I was dilating fast enough and my contractions were 1 minute apart and lasting for a minute long.

I looked up videos about it before giving birth and did some research. Aside from a coworker that was ignorant to how epidural work, but constantly had rude and ignorant comments about it doping up babies, I hadn't heard or read anything about baby injuries. I do know that I can really harm the mom if it doesn't go correctly or she moves.
