spotting

I've been spotting like crazy over this past month. It started mid cycle and has continued since getting a little heavier each week or so. I'm about to start my next period hopping it will stop afterwards. I'm on birth control and have been taking it since last January. Seems unusual to me for that to start now especially since I take my birth control correctly. I'm also experiencing some mild pain in my lower right side, may be related but I'm not sure. Any ideas? Have any of you experienced this before?
