horrible sleeping - please help!

My LO will be 8 mos next week and he's been sleeping terribly lately. Up throughout the night and inconsolable. We have to bring him into bed and coddle for a while until he goes back to sleep. Sometimes we can get him back in the crib - sometimes he sleeps in this little pillow in bed with us. It's torture! We tried cry it out for about 2 weeks and it only got worse and worse. Any help or advice?!
