What does fertile window mean?

I thought that you could get preggo anytime you have unprotected sex. Is the fertile window when its more likely that you become pregnant, or the /only/ time you're able to become pregnant...?

Answer

You can get conceive only when your ovulate. Ovulation only happens in a 12-24 hour span. The egg is released. However the fertile window is about 5 days before ovulation and 2 days after ovulation, because if you have sex during this time, sperm can survive in the vagina for 3-5 days. You ovulate approximately 2 weeks before your next period, but that can change if your cycle changes.
