What should baby drink?

Is it okay to continue breastfeeding while my baby has a cold? I heard that feeding my baby breast milk may cause him to develop more mucus. I was told to give him some apple juice diluted with water. Is this true? Ladies, please help! Thanks!

Oh my gosh, no! Whoever said that might have been thinking of regular milk. No, your breastmilk is the absolute BEST thing for your baby when they're sick. Not only does it have antibodies, but your nipples actually 'vacuum up' some of your babies saliva when your feeding him, then your body makes a 'prescription' for them to be produced more and more. You might even notice the color of your breastmilk actually changing during this time. It's amazing! The more breastfeeding, the better!

For young babies especially, water/pedialyte/juice is not recommended. There is a lot of sugar in pedialyte and juice which actually isn't good for the immune system, not to mention their sensitive tummies. As far as water, they should get all the water they need from your milk. Just nurse often and drink lots of water ☺.

When my little man has a cold I drip a few drops of Saline in his nose, then suction it out. That helps clear him out so he can nurse better. I agree keep breastfeeding.

Who told you that?? He should only be drinking breastmilk while he is sick- it'll give him the antibodies he need to recover quickly

Only breastmilk - I don't know why someone told you apple juice, apple juice is really sweet and baby might not want to go back to breastmilk after having apple juice, or may give you a really hard time going back to it. I'm not sure about the mucus being thick part, but that happens to adults and adults don't breastfeed - it just comes with being sick. Baby is going to need your antibodies to help fight off the sickness. Put a humidifier in baby's room to help break down the mucus and for better breathing.

Breast milk only. You can use an aspirator to get out any mucus. Breast milk will help baby get better faster.
