38+5 here and haven't ever had a period cramp, braxton hicks or a contraction. So I guess we'll see what happens.

With my first I had a partial placental abruption, so I was in the hospital for all of my labor. With my other two the only way I knew it was labor was when my Contractions got really intense and I couldn't speak through them. Having regular contractions for me doesn't necessarily mean I'm in labor, because it could be false labor. I know it's not necessarily the best answer, but that was honestly the only way I knew that it was real.

My water broke and I never contracted on my own. So 12 hours after it being broken I had to be induced to lower the risk of infection.

I knew I was in early labor because they were like period cramps but a bit more intense, and were constant every 15 minutes for most of the day. They were never irregular, and always felt the same intensity. I've had braxton hicks and other nightly pains (third pregnancy) and I just know it's not time. A contraction is a pretty distinct feeling.

You will know! You may confuse the little contractions at first, but it will be obvious when they become strong.
