I'm sorry you're going through this bittersweet experience! I'm currently 17 weeks pregnant and had twins up until 8/9 weeks. When I went in for my 8 week ultrasound we were shocked/thrilled to see twins! But one was measuring a week behind and my doctor prepared me for the possibility of vanishing twin syndrome. We had to come back the next week to see what happened. That one week was such a rollercoaster- we found out that our type of twins (monoamniotic+monochorionic) are very rare and risky. We wanted both but we're also scared to have both because there are so many complications. At the next ultrasound we had one baby. My doctor told me absolutely do not worry about our single baby: vanishing twin syndrome only affects the non-viable twin and women almost always go on to have completely healthy pregnancies. Our little girl is doing great so far! We miss her twin sometimes but I trust that it happened for a good reason and I would rather have lost the baby early than full term.
Vanishing Twin
Went today for my first ultrasound and was not very surprised (been having a feeling) that it was twins. One twin is no longer viable and based on measurements it was within the last couple days that it passed. Both were measuring 8 weeks 6 days. The non viable twin should absorb into my body. Now I'm just worried that the other one might not make it either. Have another ultrasound scheduled in two weeks to check on the remaining twin and make sure the other starts shrinking. Trying not to be worried but it's a little hard.
