May be a dumb question but Doulas?

I keep hearing about Doulas and in my hospital research it states that the Dr. will work with one. What exactly is their purpose? How do you go about finding one? Is it something insurance covers?

Insurance does not cover them. Their purpose is to have someone with a lot of labor experience to support you through your labor and delivery, and sometimes earlier in pregnancy too. They are like a coach, extra set of hands, friend, massage person, food fetcher, whatever you need. If you have a partner who's willing and ready to coach you through labor, and maybe a mom or sister there to lean on, you probably don't need one. If you feel you could benefit from an advocate to help with birth plans, extra support, or extra knowledge, consider one.
