Leaving baby alone in room

My son turned 4 months on the 20th, and I was thinking about trying out his big boy crib in his room and leaving him alone for the night but monitoring him through the video baby monitor. My mom thinks it's not a good idea and that he's too young, but I disagree. Your thoughts would be appreciated
