Racial Tension in Schools?

Black History Month starts tomorrow. What is your kids school doing to celebrate?

I went to a predominately Caucasian high school growing up and nothing was done ever. So, my first mission as Black Student Union president was to make changes. I got the school to allow us to do a performance on music and black influence during lunch. Morning announcements included black history facts and I places up poster of black inventors around the school.

I felt empowered as a young black teen.

My children go to a predominantly black school. We live on MLK lol like it's all in and over our city. They had a parade and they dressed up as influential African Americans. Even my kids did it. My daughter chose Rosa Parks and my son was Langston Hughes. They are whiter than a sheet of paper. All history is important in my opinion. They wrote a little index card and recited why the individual was important or cool to them.

We went to a school that was 89% African American, and let me tell you, Black History Month is a God damn jamboree. I love it. We'll have successful speakers (including an artist, army general and our music teacher who is also a gospel singer). My 'father' has amazing black history artwork, so we'll have an art crawl including all this work and all of his historic African pieces he's collected over the years. And on the last day of BHM, we have the program.

This varies greatly. Two years ago, we had professional dancers and singers come in to perform at the gym, which was amazing (especially when they began to teach us the moves and such, it was a damn party lol). Last year, I was actually the director of 'Tales from the Plantation Hollows', which featured speakers such as Harriet Tubman, WEB DuBois, and so many more - ALL STUDENT RAN. The only adults were my 'Pops' (a teacher who adopted me halfway through HS) and his daughter, as he was in charge of all BHM programs and his daughter was head of that professional African dance team I mentioned.

Sadly I'm not as involved this year, with a one month old, but you bet your ass imma help my Pops with BHM this year. I fucking LOVE Black History Month.

I was in a predominantly black high school, and nothing was done. :/ However, I feel as though that was because the administration was awful, and not because they were ignoring it.

We pretty much did a lot of history during that month. Each kid had to write about a black person in our history who made a difference. We had a play and we learned about the different black cultures and even brought speakers in to teach us about them.

I don't have kids but I went to three different high schools and the way they celebrated was different. One of my schools actually invited some African lady who was singing in Swahili. Nothing against that but it had nothing to do with black history month. Most of the time though there was an assembly that honored the usual people.

I'm sorry your school didn't do anything for it. I'm from NYC, we had assemblies in school but what was more important to me is that we spent the month learning about many famous African American people (not just MLK). I'm happy to have had the privilege to learn about all these great Americans.

I went to a predominately Hispanic high school and as far as I can remember, there was nothing going on. But cinco de mayo on the other hand...
Now I'm in a completely mixed college and I'm not involved at all so I have no idea if they do anything. I'm prettyyyy sure we do but you can't ask me what lol

From preschool to 4th grade I went to an all black school and we always did something for black history month. I used to love it. We watched movies about MLK and the civil rights movment, dressed up like famous black athletes, doctors, scientist, inventors, etc we had special assemblies where we played games and learned so much about black history. I went to an all white school from 5th-12th grade and I don't remember a time where we even talked about black history for more than 10 minutes. We didn't do anything for black history month. The school didn't even acknowledge it. They mostly focused on Valentine's Day. I was so confused I remember asking my teacher why weren't we going to do anything for black history month and he just simply told me we don't have time for it.
