period on depo?

I have been on the Depo shot for a little less than a year now and I haven't had my period in 5 months, until right now. I have been experiencing horrible period cramps but i wasnt bleeding. A couple days after the cramping started i was getting brown discharge, and then today i felt wet and noticed it was blood. I don't understand because my gyno told me that my periods would stop and they did. If im correct the depo puts ovaries in a dormant state, so why would my uterine line be shedding if there was no egg released? Should i be considered? Why would it randomly start my periods back up?
