4 weeks and 3 days ! cramping

So today I'm 4 weeks and 3 days. I woke up with extreme cramps no spotting or bleeding just cramps and nausea. They've been off and on just cramps in my uterus. I know the doctor said cramping is normal but are they suppose to be painful ? This is my first pregancy !? Thank you in advanced. It just freaks me out anybody else experience this ?
