blood work at 10 weeks?

Is it normal to get lab work done around 10 weeks? Im not sure if its a routine thing or to test for genetic disorders. My doctor gave me a paper to look over and told me i didnt have to make a decision that day but to pick what i would maybe want done to give him an idea. I picked the one that would let you find out the gender. But i dont have the money for that so if thats what it is im going to cancel the appointment.
