Group B Strep?

Question

Anyone test positive and ask to schedule a c section instead of waiting for labor to come on its own? Did your doctor approve a c section? Just found out and I'm terrified I know someone whose child died from contracting it!!! You need 4+hours of antibiotics before active labor and if your water breaks before that your baby can be exposed and contract it no matter what kind of delivery you have!! So to me scheduling a C makes more sense I go in get antibiotics and then they delivery her via c section making her chances even less of contracting it....

I'm not sure that they'd consider that an indication. Even when they give the antibiotics, they give them as prophylaxis (as a precaution) not every mom with group B strep would give it to the baby and not every baby would get sick from it (even without the antibiotics). The biggest risk is when someone's water breaks and they don't know it.

I had it and gave birth naturally with no complications to myself or the baby. I was given the antibiotics and that was all that was needed.

Definitly talk to you doctor about it! You do get a say in your birth :) I know a few women who were positive and one was induced at 38 weeks and the other went into labor on her own and had a beautiful healthy baby girl! Try not to worry too much or you will drive yourself nuts!!

Babies can get sick from it if you don't receive the antibiotics in time but usually you do and it's no problem. Just go in once your water breaks so they can start the antibiotics. If by chance baby comes before you get time for the antibiotics, they'll do blood work on baby at six hours old to see if it looks like baby has an infection. They monitor that very closely. If baby's labs start to look bad, they'll put baby on antibiotics for 3-7 days and that'll take care of it. It's not a big concern really. It's rare that mommies don't get the antibiotics in time in labor. I'm a postpartum/nursery nurse at the local hospital and this isn't super common. Just don't wait at home while you're in labor, just go in.

I had GBS with my first and had antibiotics during labor. My daughter is 6 now and perfectly healthy and has been from birth. I had her vaginally. I just had my test done for this pregnancy today and hoping it's negative. Only because I want to not be attached to a Iv this time.

I just had my son on the 23rd of January, my water broke at 10am (at the time, i wasnt sure it was my water), i got to the hospital and was given a room at 1:57pm and my little guy was born at 245pm. They did start me on antibiotics but i did get the full dose before my son was born. He is now 3 weeks old and perfectly healthy. They did get blood cultures (which were negative) and give him iv antibiotics for 48 hours after he was born just to be on the safe side. Based on his cultures, we could have skipped the antibiotics but we would rather be safe than sorry. To answer your question, my doctor tries to avoid c sections at all costs so she would have been against if the only reason was to avoid going into labor on your own. Another option to consider is an elective induction, that way you can pick the date but dont have to go through major surgery. A lot of doctors wont induce before 39w though

I tested positive my last pregnancy, my water broke at home and I delivered vaginally and my son was perfectly fine. They just started antibiotics as soon as I was admitted

I tested positive with my first son and delivered vaginally. I wasn't aware of my test results until I was in labor...A c-section is a major surgery. Personally, I wouldn't elect to have one if not medically needed. Being GBS positive isn't grounds to automatically have a c-section. By the time that labor is done and you are ready to push, your antibiotics will be finished...and with delivering vaginally or via cesarean, you'll have to be given the antibiotics.

I tested pos got the iv when my water broke. My sister had her baby then found out she had it. Its not very likely your baby will get it. I wouldnt choose unnecessary surgery because your friend had a bad experience. Here they wont do csection with a medical reason and that isnt considered one

I tested positive with my first and honestly I never knew until recently when I was looking at her medical records starting from birth. I guess doctors kept it a secret to keep me calm. I do recall them telling me they were giving me antibiotics to ward off any infections, but not that I actually had an infection that could be fatal to me fetus. Anyway they gave me the antibiotics and I delievered her vaginally and she was fine. I scheduled for an induction two days before she actually came and was in labor for 26 hours when my water broke at 4cm it went quickly I had her in 2 hours. So I'm assuming that I had enough time in between so that my daughter wouldn't be endanger. I can understand your fear because if your baby contracts it it can be fatal, but consider all your options. Speak with your OB about what would be best for you get all the facts before making an absolute decision. Good luck mama
