Should I tell hjm?

I have worked for my boss for 2 years. The plan has been for me to take over the business when I get my degree, which will take a few more years. However, I have decided to pursue a different path instead. Honestly, a lot of why is because I can't stand my boss. Anyway, I plan on leaving late this year, so several months from now. I don't know if I should wait until last minute to tell him (1 month before), or tell him now (9 months before) so he can plan to replace me since I will no longer be taking over the firm, which is a much bigger deal than leaving say, a waitressing job. What do you ladies think?

I think if there's a risk of him letting you go if you tell him now (and you rely on the income) then wait to tell him. If you don't need his reference for future jobs or don't care that the relationship may be severed by telling him right before, than just give him the amount of notice required by labour laws (two weeks in most places) or one month as you said. Things happen and people change their mind so unless you have something in writing committing to taking over the business, it should be fine!

I had a similar situation. I would wait because you don't know what may happen and it could make it a very miserable 9 months. Also, your circumstances may change which could leave you in an awful place.

I say 60-90 days notice is good. If you wait until last minute you could be leaving him in a lurch but if you do it to early then he may fire you and move on out of spite for your broken plans.

I would tell him more than a month before, but definitely not any more than 2 months before you plan to leave. 1 so he can find someone else but also so you don't have 9 months of hell to put up with until you actually leave

I would a month before. Just because you never know if they might say okay you can leave now. Also yes he can start finding a replacement but in reality no one is going to wait 9 months for a job. I mean they might work somewhere else until they can get it. But thats more than likely not going to be the case. And I'm not sure what you do or how big your community is but it might not be that hard to find someone to take your place like you think it could be.

This is a hard situation. It depends on how you think he will react. My biggest fear of telling him in advance (now) would be he could ask you to just leave now. Or if you wait he might be upset you didn't give him more notice. You should probably try to gauge how he will react and decide that way. Sorry, it's a risk either way.
