tampons

I just started my period today and I have my swimming carnival Wednesday my period however last 7-8 days. Is there any way I can shorten my period? I know most of you will say use a tampon but I haven't used one before and guess I just get a bit scared before putting it in and over think it all. Any help would be greatly appreciated tia
