When do you test?

Hi! When do you recommend testing for pregnancy? I usually have a 29 day cycle, today makes 31 days since I have had my period (well when the day ends). I tested early, early this morning and got a negative. It was a Walgreens Brand. Any suggestions if I do not get my period? Any recommendations for a certain pregnancy brand? Has anyone gotten a negative but found out they were pregnant shortly after?? Thanks in advance!!
