STDs?

So I've just been wondering this for a while, and my school never gave us sex ed or a health class or anything (some parents complained about it being too early the year before I was supposed to go into the grade they taught it and they just stopped altogether) and I've never been to a gynecologist before. So anyways, how does someone get an std? Does it come from someone who's already had unprotected sex with a previous partner? My boyfriend and I lost our virginity to each other and are the first to each other to ever do anything sexual, are we still able to get stds from each other?

You generally get them from a sexual partner who has it, but people can sometimes be born with it. Like a mother who has chlamydia can pass it on to her child during birth.

You can get it from someone who's already been sexually active with someone who had the STD/STI at the time of their encounter.  So you and your boyfriend, if neither have ever done anything sexual (oral included) are fine. 
However, cold sores are classified as an STD and that doesn't require sexual contact. Just contact with someone who has the open sore.
