Isn't C-section safer than vaginal birth?

Question

I read from Wikipedia that nearly half of stillbirths occur during childbirth. In that case, isn't C-section a safer way to give birth?

2. I'm willing to bet that they are more common in places where women have limited or no prenatal care and therefore don't have the option of c-sections 
3. Do the statistics differentiate between babies who died in womb and then had to be delivered vs those that died during the act of childbirth?
4. Does the statistic consider the recovery and ultimate health of the mother? As others have pointed out, c-sections are major surgery that involve literally propping your organs outside your body to gain acccess to the womb.

For the majority of women, vaginal delivieries are safer. However there are some cases when c-sections are necessary for the health and safety of both - moms with severe preeclampsia for instance may not tolerate labor well. Also, if there is placenta previa (over the cervix) the baby certainly can't come out that way!
There are also some instances where doctors/midwives disagree on the relative safety of vaginal delivery versus section: twin/multiple births, breach births, babies predicted to be "large," women who have previously had a cesarean, women who aren't dialating "fast enough"... etc.

In our lawsuit happy society a lot of doctors may rush into a csection at the first sign of anything risky because if it comes down to it a woman isn't going to sue over a delivery that wasn't what she wanted but she got a living child in the end. People sue when babies die. They cover their butts.

The thing with c-section is that it is a major surgery. They cut you open, pull out some of your insides and your baby and stitch you back up. There is a lot of room for complication there. Problems with anesthesia, infections, and complications down the line with scar tissue either making it hard to conceive again or making your uterus unstable during subsequent deliveries just to name a few.

Bodies are made to give birth vaginally, most of the time. Especially healthy bodies- women who take care of themselves and eat healthfully and exercise are at a reduced risk for complications. Our bodies know how to recover from birth and to re strengthen the muscles that can be worn out or damaged by pregnancy. Bodies don't really know how to come back from being cut open- they just sorta send a little cellular crew to that spot and patch it up.

This is true IF there is a severe problem during labor such as baby goes into distress due to cord being around the neck or placental abruption, or if moms placenta is too low and  vaginal birth could lead to hemorrhaging. In other countries without quality medical care, this is a problem because these problems are not detected and moms and babies lives are at risk, this is also why women and babies used to die in childbirth much more often than today. But if you're at the hospital during delivery, they can tell by the monitors if baby is in distress, in which case they will order a c section for yours and baby's safety. As a woman who has had 2 vaginal births and 1 c section, I would NOT recommend the c section unless it's medically necessary. I hated my c section in comparison to my vaginal births and the recovery was awful. I also had a friend who got MRSA from her c section. So it's not safer unless yours or the baby's life is otherwise in danger, which was the case for my 3rd birth.

Anyone can edit wikipedia, its a public engine. I wouldn't use it for medical advice. There are much better sites like Web MD, or I dunno, your Dr to get the best information. Vaginal birth vs c section is a very personal choice and in this day in age I don't think one has more risk than the other. With that said, they each have very different associated risks but all in all, they both get the baby delivered in the end.
