Do you think the general public understands science?

This was in my professor's lecture today because he was annoyed that this politician said that fruit fly research which is genetic testing benefits so many with genetic diseases because it allows us to understand genomes. Anyway what do you guys think? Does the general public understand science?

I really don't know and I'm biased, because I hold degrees in chemistry and forensic science, so I would say yes, but still have a tough time thinking most people do.

Based on my experience, the general public has limited education, period. A lack of robust understanding of science is definitely one of the indicators of this limited education.

When I was pregnant my SO and I were trying to guess what color eyes lit daughter wouodn me up with.
Mine are brown and his are blue.
He said "her eyes will be blue because blue eyes are a dominant gene in my family."
