Who comes first? Spouse or children?

Question

I've been told by family that your spouse always comes first because they were there before the children and they will be there afterwards. Your spouse is your partner. Your backbone. Your other half. Now this doesn't mean your children don't matter it just means that your spouse takes priority in arguments with children and decisions regarding both parties. 
What's your opinions?

It depends. I don't think there's exactly a solid answer. 
Obviously if your kids need food or clothes, they come first before anyone. 
But you want to show your kids how a marriage works. Show them how to care for another person. You want them to be able to tell a future girlfriend how much you loved their mother/father and how obvious it was. 
It's completely possible to put your spouse first and still tend to your children too. You have to give your spouse emotional support too. Show your kids that being by your spouse when they need you is how a relationship should work. Not hardly having any time with each other will just cause a divorce in due time because you will eventually grow apart. 
You are correct when you say your spouse will be by you when your kids are gone. Your spouse chose you, your kids didn't.

I think my husband an I will put our children first while we are raising them. Once they are adults and on their own, we would put each other first. Does this make sense?

Neither. We're a team, we all work together to take care of each other. The person with the most need at a given time comes first. That doesn't mean we never go on dates, or spend adult time, because we definitely do as well, but we're much happier spending time as a family unit.

You need to make time for your spouse. The romance or passion can't die or else someone will resent the other or the children because of it. It's important to maintain both.
