Checking for dilation

What's your guys opinion on this? I have my 36 week appointment next week (even though I'll be 36+6) and I know my doctor plans to check my cervix. I've been reading around here that that can sometimes cause you to dilate more? Is that true, I want to know but my husband is out of town until I'm 37+6 and I don't want to risk going into labor before he gets back. What's your ladies opinions?
