In light of International Women's Day, I wanted to have a discussion on this picture. Being a mother and having kids are great, but to me this picture shows that society still views us as wives/mothers before anything else. Thoughts?

This meme is a very narrow definition of womenhood.

It's not necessarily a bad definition, it's just woefully incomplete.  Let's expand the definition and not pigeon hole our young people into less than what they want.

That's an odd picture. The only difference is the baby. Its like she is waiting all her teen years to fullfil her destiny as a mother, and once she has the child, she just waits death. Not a problem in being only a SAHM for life, some women dont see themselves doing anything but being a mother, but to generalize like that is quite... Odd

Why not show her in a cap and gown, or a military uniform, or a police uniform, or a business suit? She's a young girl, then she's pregnant, then she has a kid, then she gets old. It seems odd to me.

Why does it have to be viewed as negative? Nowhere does it say that's the only thing worth celebrating about being a woman. We are the ones who are able to grow a human, and I think that's a pretty badass thing to celebrate.

I agree. It's a very narrow view of what is considered "womanhood". You are as much as a woman if you don't want kids, or can't have them. You are not less worthy or a failure. There are many other ways to be successful as a woman, having a child shouldn't be our only goal.

The world views women as bodies that make babies. That's just how it is. A lot of time, childless women are seen as if they haven't done what they were meant to do or as if they are somehow unhappy with their childless life. Motherhood is great and all. But you're right, it's not all that women are put on this Earth to do and the idea is exclusionary to a lot of different women. We are brains too. Not just uteri. And there are trans and infertile women left out by this photo too.

It's cute and all, but it's not the only purpose of a woman.
