Will the state/ gov / irs take my money too

So my fiance claimed our baby . .tax return was 5500. However we got a letter from irs saying they took all 5500 for student loans he owed and were gonna take 15% of checks if a payment plan wasnt made.

We were getting married in august but curious can they take my momey too if we are married? Erg.

It depends. If you have a joint bank account with him, then yes. Also if you live in a community property state, then yes. Community property states include California, Idaho, Louisiana, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin.

If you all share a bank account they may take out of there. I didn't know but my ex was behind on child support (long story but he didn't get to see them or talk to them. He was behind a couple months due to moving,etsing,etc) any who they took the lump sum out of the account we shared. I was POED because while at the time they were legally my stepchildren I didn't see why I had to pay when I've never even talked to them in the three yrs we were together. So make sure your bank accounts are separate and try to file married but separate to avoid yours being taken. The only way it'll benefit you filing together is to keep him from having to pay in.

Yes they will.  It happened to me years ago.  I was behind on a student loan i owed them 1,000. Well me and many husband filed taxes and they took it out of our taxes. He called irs and they said that he could file a spousal petition saying it wasn't his debt. So he can get his portion of the money back but it takes forever.  When you do your taxes tell them you have this debt and they will have your spouse fill out that paper that day.

My parents are behind on CS(long story) they took my parents return and are threatening to garnish 45% of wages. Keep everything separated and file separately next year. That's the only way you'll keep your money.
