The birth control monster

Hello all, for years now I've been researching and hearing horror stories of birth control. I have very supportive women in my family who have allowed me to grow into my own person and have always allowed me to explore all my options. But when it comes to birth control all the women in my immediate family have had terrible side effects from birth control. This has scared me into thinking that birth control may have the same effect on me. I do have faith in today's modern medicine that I may find a birth control that's right for me. I am now hoping to be able to get on something that will have little to no side effects. My boyfriend and I have been together for almost a year now and have discussed birth control many times. He's always been supportive of whatever I choose, but of course is pro birth control. Any thoughts or suggestions for my situation? I have a doctors appointment tomorrow with a new doctor and I'm hoping things go smoothly.
