hospitals saying they do first ultrasound at 12 weeks?

Hey guys so I was wondering if this is normal. The doctor say they don't do ultrasounds until about 12 weeks now unless there is reasonable cause to do one earlier (like a previous miscarriage or symptoms of a miscarriage). I feel like this is not normal. I'd rather know soon if it was an ectopic pregnancy or something rather than wait 12 weeks thinking everything was fine just to find out it wasn't. What are your guys throughts? I feel like this is another thing the hospital does just to save time and money
