is it dangerous to get sick while pregnant?

I know someone at work who's sister lost her baby in late stages of pregnancy and the doctor said her having the flu must have gone to the baby and been too much. Sorry for that sad news but now I have a cold and cough and am worried after hearing that. Anyone had a cold and cough while pregnant and been fine? Or anyone want to add to the information (or lack of) that I have?
