What did you think of Netflix's 13 reasons why?

If you didn't watch did you read the book? If so, what is your opinion?

It was a trigger for me. At some point in high school I was Hannah. Difference is I sought help from my computer teacher who was honest with us about her fertility issues.

My daughter will be 13 this year and I will be sharing the book with her then. Right now we are watching the Netflix series together.

Is 13 reasons why something that should be thought in high schools? Is this something that you would share with your adolescent children? Why or why not?

I read the book as an incoming freshman for summer reading a few years ago. And honestly, watching the series now that I'm about to be done with high school for good, reminded me of the way all of the kids in my class actually "made fun" of Hannah and what happened in the books. Now, the show came out and all of my class watched it to kind of reminisce. And it's funny because all of their minds changed. Like, they all understood more of how high school is hard and the struggles we can face. I do think the book is enlightening in a way, but it needs to be enforced SERIOUSLY in schools that bullying is not okay, rape is a SERIOUS crime, etc. All schools have "policies," but few do anything to actually help students with their mental health. I enjoyed both the book and series because of the message. I just wish it were more universally understood and bullying was more accurately punished in schools.

Yes it should be taught in school and at home. People need to learn how their actions can affect someone else's life. Just because you can take so much doesn't mean someone else can take as much. I also feel kids don't feel like they have a safe person in school and I wish people did.

This book was actually one of the options for my summer reading for my 8th grade year. I didn't read it though. I know what it's about and I think it can teach kids a valuable lesson. I am sure plenty of people have already learned from it.

I felt it was interesting and thought provoking. I can relate to Hannah's experiences in some ways and it had the lingering sadness through every episode that no matter what happened, nothing could bring her back now it's too late, which I think might be good for bullies and those being bullied because it makes it feel more real that once you're gone you're gone forever. BUT I hated the swearing. It was completely unnecessary and didn't help the story and I think it makes it inappropriate for young teens to watch when Justin and all his friends can't say a sentence without at least one F word.

I thought it was a great series and opens up how true this is in life as a teenager. We need to teach or talk about how emotions and feelings are real and should not be put aside just because "teenage emotions" don't count since they do..I will be purchasing the book!

I didn't like it. I personally think Hannah blamed everyone else for her decisions. Bullying sucks but she made some dumb decisions as well.
